Montefiascone

Places to See

Montefiascone is a citadel town. Perched high on the edge of the crater, it commands the lands for miles around in every direction and straddles the Via Cassia, the main route north from Rome. In its time it was the seat of power, being occupied by Popes and the Pope's representative during the period when the papacy ruled from France. As you would expect, it is dominated by the Cathedral Santa Margherita and its fortress. The dome itself is second only to St Peter's in size. The old town is little changed, as you can see from the photographs.
